Named after the province in which he was found Vieng was confiscated by
the forestry department in Viengkam District, Luang Prabang Province. He
arrived at the rescue centre in a very poor condition showing all the
signs of malnourishment neglect but is now thriving thanks to the
commitment of the keepers.
Vieng is a gentle soul with a lovely nature and tends to spend much
of his time with Ninh, a young bear around the
same age. As all the bears are orphans the companionship they share with
the other bears is extremely important and it is clear that Vieng and
Ninh have a special bond. They like to sit
together in one of the trees and survey what’s going on below. Sometimes
Kayasin will join them which they don’t seem
to mind too much.
Shy, quiet and intelligent Vieng is quick to extract food from
enrichment toys placed in the enclosure, particularly papaya which is
one of his favourites.
Vieng also likes to relax in fresh running water and you’ll often
find him spread out on the rocks in the shallow part of the stream that
runs through the enclosure. Not a bad way to cool down on a hot day! |
