Beautiful Tat Kuang Si is home to a bear rescue centre built and maintained by Free The Bears.

All the bears here have been confiscated from traffickers and poachers, sometimes arriving at the centre in poor condition.  Only with the devoted care and support of the keepers at the rescue centre do they begin to flourish in the safety of a secure, forested sanctuary. Asiatic Black Bears numbers are becoming dangerously low in the wild due to the illegal trade for bile and restaurants, as well as the loss of its habitat from human activity. For more information about bears and how you can help, please see our Bear Info pages.

Tat Kuang Si is approximately 30 km south of the centre of Luang Prabang - any Jumbo (tuk-tuk) driver will be happy to take you there.  There are also 2 buses a day leaving at 10:30 and 1:30, tickets can be booked through most hotels and guesthouses or directly from the office on the riverside on Thanon Khem Khong.  See our map for directions out of town if you are driving / cycling.

Please Note: There is a small charge (currently 15000 Kip) to enter Tat Kuang Si park.  Free The Bears is a registered charity and does not receive any money from the entrance fee.  We rely on the support and generosity of the public to continue our projects in Laos and throughout the world.  Donations can be made at the Tat Kuang Si centre or via the Free The Bears website.  Thank you.
