Kham was confiscated by the forestry department in Luang Prabang province along with her brother Deng.

Kham and Deng may be siblings but they are quite different both in personality and physical appearance. Deng is long legged and lean with quite a cheeky character, whilst Kham is shorter, slightly fuller and more tranquil.  They both, however, have the same long slender face and snout with lovely bright eyes. Quite the lady of the group she is poised and demure and really has quite a regal way about her!  She’s not one to rush and just takes life at her own pace – well that is until she smells some tasty treat!

Its no myth that bears love honey and none more so than Kham. She has a particularly sweet tooth and loves to seek out sticks dipped in honey that we hide around the enclosure as part of an enrichment program.  It’s rumoured that bears can smell honey from as much as 5 km away, and with Kham we can certainly believe it!  She’s also a big fan of bananas and the most adept at peeling and consuming them. Definitely a lady that likes her food - even her beloved Kayasin comes second to food in her affections!

As you can see she likes to spend afternoons belly up on the log piles, chewing some of the fresh leaves, grasses, berries and banana shoots that we place on each day

(Kham is lying on her back, the other bears are Damm, Kayasin and Deng)
