FTB Objectives

The objectives of the fund are to achieve the protection, preservation and enrichment of bears through:

  • Funding and facilitating in-situ and ex-situ conservation and rehabilitation projects.
  • Preserving natural habitat and bio-diversity.
  • Encouraging harmonious and respectful animal-human relationships by facilitating profitable and sustainable alternatives to the illegal wildlife trade.
  • Empowering indigenous people and communities through training initiatives such as the Protected Area Ranger program.
  • Providing information, fostering awareness, and facilitating education with regard to threats facing the global bear population.
  • Providing international support and sponsorship for individuals involved with the preservation and conservation of bears.
  • Supporting the instigation of new, the review of existing, and the enforcement of appropriate, wildlife legislation to prevent extortion of rare and endangered species as a result of the illegal wildlife trade.

Profile

Since its inception Free the Bears Fund has diligently campaigned against the Asian practice of farming Asiatic Black bears for their bile, the capture and dismemberment of the Sun bear in the restaurant trade, and the poaching and illegal trade of various bear species throughout the world. Its campaigns have raised awareness on both a national and international level.

Whilst supporting the strengthening of wildlife protection legislation throughout Asia, Free the Bears Fund acknowledges that until such time as habitats are provided for confiscated animals, that enforcement of these laws will not take place. The Fund has therefore worked cooperatively with a number of Asian government departments to build such habitats. These include sanctuaries in Cambodia and Laos as well as projects in India, Vietnam and Russia.

These habitats, however, function only as an intermediate solution to the problem of illegal wildlife trade. Therefore Free the Bears Fund seeks to implement programs which will result in the creation of conservation areas, the instigation of rehabilitation techniques and global education, if these animals are to be successfully reintroduced into the wild.

Free the Bears Fund aims to assist indigenous people and communities to seek alternative, sustainable relationships with bears and has placed emphasis on the development of human as well as animal welfare.  The Fund's future directions are based upon a holistic approach to preserving the bear's natural habitat via a series of proactive community projects, and financial aid is currently being sought from external funding institutions.
